Pakistan Has Tactical Nuclear Weapons That Could Be Deployed by Field Commanders

The current trend in relations between Pakistan, India, and China seems to be worsening – and nuclear capabilities are being increased on all sides. The most concerning recent news is that Pakistan may choose to deploy small tactical nuclear weapons that may be used by commanders in the field.

“These are difficult times for India. To counter the growing blue water capability of the Indian Navy, China has transferred designs and expertise to enable the Pakistan Navy to introduce tactical nuclear weapons (TNWs) at sea.

On November 5, 2013, the Pakistan Army’s Strategic Forces Command (test) fired two quadruple salvos (i.e. eight missiles) of the NASR short-range (60 kilometre) battlefield ballistic missile capable of carrying a “new miniaturised” 200 kg plutonium warhead, (under development since 2011, but essentially a copy of a Chinese TNW tested in 1992 by China), thus introducing TNWs on land.

These NASR missile batteries with TNWs would be placed under local battlefield commanders (unlike strategic nuclear weapons which are under the National Command Authority, headed by Pakistan’s Prime Minister), who may use them at their discretion to blunt a conventional Indian attack (in response to a terror attack on India like 26/11).

Thus it will initiate a nuclear war, as India would respond with a massive nuclear strike in keeping with its nuclear doctrine. It is apparent from Pakistan’s posture and Chinese border incursions that these two allies do not believe that India will follow its nuclear doctrine of massive retaliation.” – Deccan Chronicle

It’s probably impossible to know if or when any nuclear capable government would choose to give battlefield commanders tactical nuclear weapons to use as they saw fit. But this nuclear threat is clearly on the table and could have serious consequences.

At the very least fallout from blasts or these small bombs could contaminate areas downwind for about 30 days – the highest radiation within the first few days. The worst case would be an escalation into a more widespread nuclear war.

The Good News!

Nuclear war is survivable. Nuclear fallout from blasts decays to safe levels within about 30 days; so with a simple shelter, provisions, and protection from looters you can survive.

News like this should remind us that nuclear wars – small or large – are on the table and we should cast-off the stigma, turn our backs on the urban legends of doomsday, and do what we can to prepare for the possibility.

Basic Preparations

Here’s a short list of the things you can do right now to prepare for nuclear war.

, and store it in an EMP protected box along side other essential electronics.
  • Store 30+ days of water and filtration gear.
  • Store 30+ days of low/no prep foods.
  • Dig a simple temporary fallout shelter.
  • Develop a security plan and keep your preparations private to avoid looters.

Most of what folks know about nuclear war they saw in movies or learned from an urban legend. The trends show nations around the globe are increasing their nuclear capabilities. If these weapons begin to be used things could go very bad for many of us. Avoid getting caught up in the mess, make a plan now and improve your chances of riding out a storm.
